PIT FIRING WITH CAROL MOLLY PRIER

I shall now go back in time again. To 2012. In September I was hosting a big workshop through Scottish Potters Assossiation in my workshop. I could sqeeze in 25 lovely people from all over. It was the most fun and the most hard work I have ever done here. Incredible amount of planning but amazing to see so many potters interested and with a positive mind. Pit firing is a interesting tecnique to work with and I hope the pictures show that. Molly Prier travelled all the way from California to teach us in the art of pitfiring. It was an honour to have her here and an honour to host such a brilliant event!Big thanks to everybody involved!

Lots of the wonderful crowd, polishing away.

Deep concentration! One from Australia and the other from Sweden!

Pots needs to dry fast on a short workshop! In front of the wood pellet burner!

Pots stacked on to of sawdust and sprinkled with seaweed.

A bit of seawead, a bit of cupper carb. a bit of sheep poo, a bit of  wood and then FIRE!

Molly was very firm when she told us to WAIT until all was burnt down proprely until we could rootle un the ashes. I can't remember anything being so difficult!

The result was stunning! I think and hope everybody was happy with their things.

Before the workhop we luckely also had time to show Molly who comes from dry California what a proper Scottish forest look like. I think she enjoyed. Her she is with Jill (Swedish) and lovely Rike (German girl who helped out here before and during the workshop, couldn't have done it without her! Thank you Rike!)

In March it was the 60th birthday for me and the father of our girls and we decided to celebrate together! Here we all are, children, grandchildren and our new partners. A smashing party!

Anagama

Last summer I joined in something really exciting! I was asked if I could assist a firing in an Anagama kiln! The exciting ceramicist Nancy Fuller fires once a year in her japanese kiln. You can find her website here http://www.nancyfuller.co.uk  Two days of packing kiln and four days of firing. I joined in the firing days and nights. Great fun! The best thing is to have the early morning shift so you can hear the first sounds of birds in the first dawn. These are my pictures but Nancy have a really beautiful website.....

Right, so this is the last day of firing: the shed is half empty/full!

Nancy make big pots!

This picture should be at the beginning because the shed is full!

Littlethorpe Pottery in Yorkshire

Det fanns just runt hörnet, utanför Rippon.

It's a long time now so I have gone back in time a bit. I may we went on a little holiday to Yorkshire and had planned alot of nice things to do. Among it we visited a pottery just around the corner, just outside Rippon.
I had read about it in the great book Country Pottery, Traditional Earthenware of Britain by Anrew McGarva. At the end of the little bit about Littlethorpe it says: Littlethorpe remains perhaps the best preserved old pottery works which continues to function, with little of the fabric of the buildings having changed....so far.

This reminds me of Raus where I used to work.

Fin ljus terracotta
Nice light terracotta

From the workshop, a railway line heading towards the woods.

Och runt hörnet...
And around the corner...

Lertaget!
The clay pit!

Härlig lera!
Wonderful clay!
Tack.
The owner Roland Curtis (at least I think it was him we met, apologies if it was not him) allowed me to pick some clay to bring home. Thank you. We loved our visit.

Tillbaka! I am back!

After a long silence I am now back on track again. During some time I shall not try to make up for lost time but continue as if nothing happend. Hope you find that ok. Bare with me.

baskets/korgar

In the weekend we had a basket making course here at Durn Hill Farm. Six enthusiastic students wanted to learn from Tim Palmer, from Inverness, who is a skilled and experienced basket maker. This is just one of many courses he has held here. Enjoy nd get inspired by a few pictures! Next course is in May!
